Joyce Gross' wide-ranging work over the past three decades - as a researcher, publisher, scholar, teacher, collector, and organizer - has played a pivotal role in elevating quilt studies to their current level. Joyce was one of the nation's earliest and most important historians of twentieth-century quilts and quiltmaking, and her passion, generosity, and leadership have inspired many others to become involved with quilt study over the years.
Joyce was a founding member of both the Mill Valley Quilt Authority and The American Quilt Study Group; the organizer of the legendary annual Point Bonita quilting retreats and the landmark "Pieces of Time" exhibits; the founder, editor and publisher of Quilters' Journal; and developer of one of the nation's most extensive collections of quilts and quilt ephemera. In addition to her own work, she has consistently mentored and encouraged scores of others in both quiltmaking and quilt study. In 1996, Joyce was elected to the Quilter's Hall of Fame.
