Kitty Cat Ma and Aunt Rita

In memory of Kitty Cat Ma and Aunt Rita

A house with asbestos siding, a willow tree in the front yard and a swing on the front porch.
Two women, always busy; washing, mending, baking, tending, praying.
In the heat of the summer, at noon sharply they sat, watching Doug & Julie, The
Doctors and Another World. In their hands, patches of bright cotton came together in a Double
Wedding Ring or Log Cabin.
Sitting on a foot-stool made from five gallon cans and cotton batting, I watched thinking that they,
Like the hard Ozark hills around us, would always endure.
But they were flesh not stone and now I am as old as Kitty Cat Ma was on those long summer days.
A Double Wedding Ring has lasted longer than the marriage, a Bow Tie made for my parents wedding,
These I see everyday and remember.
