31. "Fancy Feathers" Karen Kielmeyer Bella Vista, Arkansas |
| Digitzed/machine embroidery, trapunto, longarm quilted, painted, swarovski crystals, wholecloth. |
| My grandmother taught me to sew when I was a small child and she helped me make my first quilt when I was a teenager. She was a hand-quilter and didn't much care for "machine" quilting. She changed her mind when I began to machine quilt and was able to complete complicated designs a bit more quickly than she could by hand. She passed away long before I became an "accomplished" quilter. Because of her early influences, I began down the traditional route . . . but soon embraced many nontraditional techniques that include thread painting, machine embroidery, embellishment, fabric dyeing and paint. "Fancy Feathers" is a tribute to my grandmother incorporating both traditional design and non traditional techniques. |
