According to Iroquois legend, corn, beans and squash are three inseparable sisters who only grow and thrive together. This tradition of interplanting is a sophisticated, sustainable system that provides long-term soil fertility and a healthy diet. Dead fish were often buried below the growing mound to improve soil quality. The Pilgrims learned this from Native Americans. As one of three sisters, this legend holds special significance to me.
