36. "Three Sisters"
Alice Helms
Asheville, North Carolina
Batik fabrics; fused applique; hand embroidery.
Three Sisters illustrates the Native American practice of growing corn, beans and squash together – a natural alliance. Corn provides a pole for bean vines to climb. Bean roots add nitrogen to the soil, and bean vines help stabilize the corn. Squash vines become a living mulch, preventing weeds and keeping the soil moist. Corn, beans and squash also complement one another nutritionally. I celebrate this simple, intuitive and life-sustaining tradition.
