05. "Alliance: Union or Joining"
Diana Ramsay
Asheville, North Carolina
Adaptation of quilt, "Interlocked Squares" by marian Ritchie in Quilts, Quilts and More Quilts by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes, pg. 64. Machine piecing. Machine quilting with domestic machine.
Upon seeing a photo of the quilt “Interlocked Squares,” I recognized that elements of this design could represent “alliance” as the stripes originate from the outside and come together to create a 25-square block, an alliance with one another. This design also depicts two ‘alliances’ joined together, diagonally, to represent alliances working together toward common objectives. Red, white, and blue are used to represent “American” in AAQ and for their highly graphic effect.
