As it begins an ambitious new plan to add international quilts, The Quilt Index is happy to announce the first posting of historic quilts from the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton.
The Royal Alberta Museum boasts a fine collection of about 75 quilts related to the province's history, and so far about 45 of them have been posted to the Index's online archive. Eventually, many more of the vintage quilts in the museum's collection will be added, as well as other heritage quilts that are still being documented from regional museums and private collections. This summer Original Sewing & Quilt Expo will hold its first show at the new Raleigh Convention Center, featuring a benefit night for the Alliance for American Quilts (Quilt Alliance).
On Friday, June 22nd in Raleigh, North Carolina, Expo attendees can opt for a special package ticket ($45) that includes 1-day Expo admission and a ticket to the Quilters Take Raleigh dessert reception and program beginning at 7 pm. The Robert and Ardis James Foundation has awarded a grant of $30,000 to the Alliance for American Quilts to help grow its highly regarded oral history project, Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.).
This invaluable grant partially funds the first two years of an ambitious five-year plan to grow, diversify and sustain Q.S.O.S., the single largest grassroots oral history project about quiltmakers. Since 1999, volunteers have conducted more than 1,000 quiltmaker interviews, full transcripts of which are shared on the Alliance website and archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Quilters Take Manhattan logo You won't want to miss the second annual Quilters Take Manhattan events, two fun and educational events to benefit the only nonprofit solely dedicated to documenting and preserving the history of quilts and their makers. The nonprofit Alliance for American Quilts will present a special Big Apple fundraiser with three linked events in New York City on August 5 and 6, 2011. On Friday night, August 5, attend the event "Modern Stories: Documenting the Modern Quilt Movement" an intimate gathering at a Garment District loft. The evening includes a panel of in-the-know bloggers, fabric designers and A-list quilters discussing the Modern Quilt movement. The Quilt Index team has released Quilt Index To Go, a fun app that delivers a new Quilt Index quilt to the palm of your hand each day. The app is now available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad on the Apple App Store for 99 cents. All revenue will support Quilt Index expansion and sustainability. The Quilt Index website (www.QuiltIndex.org) provides centralized access to nearly 50,000 records, including quilts from state or regional documentation projects, museum and private collections.
